Season 2 of Cam Boy takes the series beyond its pandemic-born origins and into new, more expansive territory. We caught up with series creator Thom Fitzgerald and actor Julien Galipeau to talk about the return of the series, surprising moments on set, and what audiences can expect this time around.

Thom, Season 1 gave audiences a very intimate look into queer sex work. What made you want to bring the series back for Season 2?

Thom Fitzgerald: I brought it back because the network said there was high demand and they really wanted it. I absolutely thought Cam Boy was a pandemic era one-off. But apparently lots of people watched it, so I felt we needed to open it up a bit—hence more stars like Julien.

Julien, what made you want to return for Season 2?

Julien Galipeau: In season one I played the main character’s boyfriend who was away in another city. I only had a few short Zoom call scenes. So, for Season 2, I was asked to come back with a more fleshed-out role and actually be in front of the camera. That was great—much more fun.

Thom Fitzgerald: His character, Ri, is an infamous hypocrite. He was very judgy in Season 1, but by Season 2 he’s a cam boy himself.

Julien Galipeau: He still hasn’t learned his lesson. He got past that initial aversion to sex work because he saw it as a way to make money. But in other ways, he’s still quite flawed.

Thom, what are the biggest differences between Season 1 and Season 2?

Thom Fitzgerald: Season 1 was filmed entirely in my house during lockdown. Season 2 completely opens up. We enter the world of more than a half dozen cam performers. The structure feels less like six episodes and more like a book with 24 interconnected chapters. We’re breaking new ground. We’ll either hit gold or strike out.

Julien, were there any surprising moments from filming this season?

Julien Galipeau: The exercise ball! We had this exercise ball with a dildo attached. I tried to inflate it with my mouth before realizing there was a pump in the box. That’s one I won’t forget.

Thom, can you describe Season 2 in just three words?

Thom Fitzgerald: A hot mess.

Julien, what did you take away from the experience of filming Season 2?

Julien Galipeau: That I’d love to work with Thom again. We always have a fun time on set, and I’d do it anytime.

Thom, what else are you working on right now?

Thom Fitzgerald: I have two horror films coming out next year starring Dylan Baker, and I’m about to shoot a drama with Jane Alexander.
