Since launching in early 2024, A Gay Old Time has blossomed into a podcast powerhouse, celebrating queer stories with heart, humour, and a healthy dose of glitter. We caught up with Nigel to talk about how the podcast came to life, the art of the interview, his passion for storytelling, and what keeps him still having a gay old time in every sense of the word.
What inspired A Gay Old Time?
There was a reason it was called A Gay Old Time…because I wanted it to be for people of all ages within our community. I’m a man in my late 50s now, and there is a tendency for some people to think that gay life can stop at 35. And it’s like, hang on a minute — no! I’m still having a gay old time at 56!
The podcast is a celebration of lived experience, resilience, and joy — without age limits or boundaries. “Whether it’s through triumph, tragedy, heartache, or huge success — everyone has a story to tell, and I just adore getting to be the facilitator for those stories to come out.
So Nigel, between all your endeavours, how are you keeping up with all your projects?
Honestly, it’s a juggle! Between hosting on shopping telly, doing radio, writing books, and running the podcast — it’s full-on. But I love it. I spin all of these plates and try to keep them all going along nicely. Right now, the podcast feels like what I’m truly meant to be doing. It’s the thing that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with excitement and pride.
How do you prepare for a podcast?
I’m an interviewer at heart. That’s what I did for years — as a showbiz journalist, a TV presenter, and now a podcaster. For me, interviewing people is what I do. And I think my superpower is getting people to share. Not because I force it out of them, but because they feel comfortable. That comfort comes from preparation and care. Research equals respect. You can’t go into an interview unplanned. Even if I don’t agree with someone or their work isn’t necessarily my cup of tea, I still go in with respect. Because someone out there will be hanging off every word.
What would you say is the biggest difference between interviewing someone on TV, on the radio, or on a podcast?
It’s the depth. With podcasting, you get goosebump moments. People say things like ‘I don’t think I’ve ever said this before’ and that’s when I know we’ve hit gold. That’s when I know I’m doing a good job. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Britney Spears or Trinity the Tuck. If someone has a story to tell, I want to guide them through it. It’s a privilege.
What’s your take on the importance of platforms like OUTtv or OUTflix?
From the beginning, I felt a connection with OUTtv. OUTtv is unapologetically, unabashedly, queer. It talks OUR language. It’s not just drag race and glitz — though we do love both! It’s also stories of grief, of, of identity. There’s something for everyone. Even back in season one of Gay Old Time, I said to my producer, ‘There’s such a commonality between what I want to do and what OUTtv is doing.’ You’re telling queer stories, and so am I. To see A Gay Old Time streaming on OUTtv and OUTflix now is just… thrilling.
What’s next for the Podcast?
With four seasons down, there is no plan of slowing down anytime soon. If the guests keep coming, I’ll keep going! I’ve manifested a lot — like having OUTtv pick up the show — and who knows? I would love for A Gay Old Time to become a TV show too. A boy can dream, right?
In the meantime, he’s got stories to tell, episodes to prep, and a whole lot of listeners to keep entertained.
A Gay Old Time is streaming now on OUTtv and OUTflix. Whether you’re 19 or 90, there’s a story waiting for you. Pop it on, settle in, and get ready to feel all the feels.
