OUTtv Celebrates Trans Day of Visibility

Founded in 2009 by U.S.-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall, TDOV was created in direct response to the frustration that the only widely recognized trans-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day focused on mourning. Crandall wanted a day that celebrated trans lives while they were being lived. That original impulse feels especially important right now.
In the first months of 2026 alone, lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills targeting transgender people across the country, covering everything from healthcare access to schools to identity documents. The Trump administration has repeatedly characterized transgender people as a societal menace and a threat to children, and that rhetoric has consequences. Research consistently shows that political debates surrounding anti-trans legislation are linked to increased anxiety, depression, and stress in trans communities, particularly among youth.
But here’s what that context makes clear: visibility isn’t a luxury. It’s a lifeline.
When trans people see themselves reflected in media, in storytelling, in public life, it sends a signal that they belong here. That their lives are worth telling. That their joy is as real and as valid as their pain. At OUTtv, that’s exactly what we’re committed to. We believe authentic stories told by and for queer and trans communities have real power, not just to entertain, but to counter the noise.
As GLAAD notes, the vast majority of people learn about trans people through TV, film, and news rather than from personal connection, which makes what gets told, and how it gets told, enormously important. TDOV is a reminder to center the full picture: the creativity, the community, the resilience, and the beauty of trans lives. Not just the headlines. Not just the legislation. The actual people.
So today, we celebrate. We amplify. And we recommit to being a platform where trans stories are told with the care and authenticity they deserve.
