Two drag powerhouses. One unforgettable battle. International drag superstars Violet Chachki and Gottmik have teamed up for their first-ever 48 city joint headline theatre tour, The Knockout Tour! Fresh off a Crazy Horse Paris residency and last year’s All Stars Live! tour, audiences can expect Violet’s signature mix of high-fashion burlesque and aerial performance, while Gottmik delivers rock-inspired drag and gender-bending edge.
Together, they’re bringing glamour, grit, and plenty of glitter-soaked athleticism to the stage. We had the pleasure of catching up with the duo about halfway through the tour and Violet explained: “This show is basically about what I do, classic burlesque, glamour, high artistry, battling against what Mik is doing, which is really rock and roll and punk. That’s where the boxing match theme came from.”
From debut live singing performances of their new albums (out this fall) to original duets, dancers, and a participatory finale, The Knockout Tour is pure drag spectacle. Each show also highlights local LGBTQIA+ supporting acts, making it a true community event. Scroll down for more of OUTtv’s Interview with Violet and Gottmik below!
You’ve toured before, but this is your first major co-headlining production together. What’s that been like?
Gottmik: It’s been good and a big learning experience. This is our first time self-producing a tour like this, so it’s been a lot more admin and office hours before the show. But I love that we get to do it together. I don’t think I could have done it alone.
How do you keep the show feeling fresh night after night?
Gottmik: We’re perfectionists, we’re constantly fine-tuning. Even on breaks I’m thinking about adding new costumes, adjusting aerial pieces, or reworking hair. There’s always something to tweak.
What’s been your favourite part of performing in Canada?
Violet: Canada just has great drag audiences. I always love Toronto and Montreal, they both have amazing energy. We are very excited to go back to Vancouver. We both had so much fun vintage shopping there last time!
You’ve both mentioned handling every part of the production yourselves. Has that changed how you connect with fans?
Gottmik: Definitely. We do meet and greets in every city, and we’ve been touring through a lot of smaller or midwestern cities that don’t usually get big queer shows. It’s been really meaningful to see how much it matters for fans to have that representation come to them, especially right now.
If you weren’t doing drag, what would you be doing instead?
Violet: I would’ve moved to New York to go to fashion school and become a designer.
Gottmik: Same! I went to fashion school before drag and started doing makeup, so I’d probably be designing or doing makeup full-time.
