With Wish You Were Queer wrapping its first season, we caught up with hosts Michael Henry and Tim Murray to talk queer chaos in Middle America, writing comedy on the road, and why they can’t stop lying to Trixie Mattel.
What was the biggest culture shock of the trip?
Tim: “That every gay in town has already slept with each other.”
Michael: “And the lack of gay bars. Some cities only had two or three—but they make it work.”
If your RV had a theme song?
Both: “Gimme More.” Enough said.
Best local moment?
Tim: “Louisville, Kentucky. Packed show in a lesbian-owned art gallery—on a weeknight, with no booze. The crowd still gave us a standing ovation.”
Funniest strategy to win over Trixie?
Tim: “Lying. We’d tell her every show was the best ever—then she’d watch the footage and call us out.”
Where do you want to go next?
Both: “The Pacific Northwest… or Canada. We’ve only done Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. We’re ready for Saskatchewan!”
Who would you bring on the next trip?
Michael: “Tim’s parents. They sell the most tickets and fully support gay comedy.”
Hardest part of writing stand-up?
Tim: “Literally all of it. You have to be personal, funny, and relatable… to gay millennials, lesbians, boomers in Florida, and everyone in between. It’s chaos.”
What’s it like touring with your bestie?
Tim: “It’s hard. But we communicate like we’re in a relationship. With some mediation. And light physical abuse.”
Michael: “Alleged.”
Season 1 may be done, but Wish You Were Queer is now streaming in full on OUTflix. Grab your bestie, your burrito, and binge the road trip comedy that made queer history—one awkward gay bar at a time.
